Q-Tip It!

I am a notorious over-thinker. In fact, last year for my birthday my best friend gave me a book called, “Am I Overthinking This?” Funny, I know. We all had a good laugh. And while it’s funny, the truth is, overthinking can be detrimental to both personal and professional endeavors.

With that in mind, I’ve been practicing the art of… NOT overthinking and not taking everything so personally. Now, when I have a lingering thought I can’t seem to get out of my head, I Q-Tip it. What does that mean? Quit. Taking. It. Personally. And the best part…when you use a Q-Tip, what do you do with it when you’re done? You put it in the rubbish bin. You don’t think about the Q-Tip for hours on end, ponder its use, and continue to speculate if you you could have done something better with it. You simply move on.

As an experienced over-thinker, it is not easy to Q-Tip every thought. And certainly, some decisions require extra thought. But, for the most part, I am excelling in Q-Tipping many items I that might have kept me up at night. Rather than mulling over the activities of the day inside my head, over and over again until all hours of the night, I am finding myself more clearheaded than ever.

What can you do to Q-Tip items in your own life? Check out my tips for thinking just a little bit less about…well…just about anything:

    • Meditate: Even a five minute meditation can make a huge difference

    • Take a walk: Fresh air does wonders for helping to clear my head. I walk weekly with a good friend and we use the time to help each other with difficult work situations. I always come back feeling refreshed and ready for whatever comes my way.

    • Get some exercise: I work out a lot of anxieties on my bike, or while lifting weights, and I always feel better when I’m done

    • Take a break: Know when to walk away. If I grow frustrated or need help getting something off my mind, I take a short break to read a chapter from whatever book I am currently reading, or to listen to a podcast. This always puts me back on track.

    • Talk it out: My most trusted mentor hears a lot from me, a lot of the time, and always dispenses invaluable advice. Find someone who you trust to talk you through difficult decisions and help you make the right choices for your business.
